ELFIN CubeSats launch event logistics

We invite you to experience the launch of the Electron Losses and Fields Investigation (ELFIN) CubeSats, a project directed by UCLA Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences (EPSS) Professor Vassilis Angelopoulos.  ELFIN is the first satellite mission built entirely at UCLA, employing over 250 undergraduate students over the past four years.

The information that we received from the 30th Space Wing Public Affairs office at Vandenberg Air Force Base is reproduced below:

We are happy to announce the Corral Road site will be open for viewing the launch of the United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket carrying the NASA ICESat-2 mission. The rocket will lift-off from Vandenberg Air Force Base's Space Launch Complex 2 at 5:46 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2018.

The Corral Road viewing site will open at 4:00 a.m. Parking is available for visitors at the Vandenberg Middle School parking lot. From there, visitors will board a bus to be taken to the Corral Road viewing site. Please note that the bus can only accommodate 27 visitors at a time, so please plan accordingly. It's also important to note that there is no personal vehicle or bus parking at the viewing site. We must do this because there are no facilities or safe areas to park vehicles. The last shuttle will depart the Vandenberg Middle School parking lot at 5:25 a.m. so that visitors may be situated to view lift-off.

There is no overnight parking or camping allowed at either Vandenberg Middle School nor the Corral Road viewing site. Trespassers will be cited and escorted from the base.

Please note that the launch window extends for about 2.5 hours starting at 5:46 a.m.  Launch may be rescheduled due to weather or technical issues with no advance warning.  Vandenberg Middle School is located at 1145 Mountain View Blvd, Vandenberg AFB, CA 93437.  We recommend that you consider packing food, water, warm clothes, and foldable chairs.  If you join us for the launch, please introduce yourself to one of about 50 ELFIN students who will attend the launch.  Please feel free to email ELFIN PR and Outreach Lead Elisa Park to let her know that you are coming or if you have any questions.
