A collaborative effort between UCLA and Caltech has led to a significant contribution to seismic research in Mexico. Forty broadband seismic stations from the UCLA-Caltech portable network have been donated to UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). This donation will support the work of former UCLA seismology student, Luis Antonio Dominguez, who has recently been appointed as an Researcher with Tenure at UNAM.
Seismometers and Recording Boxes
The selection of these forty instruments was overseen by Emeritus Professors Clayton (Caltech) and Davis (UCLA), who identified the best stations from the extensive 100-station array. These instruments have a rich history, having been previously deployed in Mexico, Peru, and the US.
With the support of this equipment, Antonio aims to conduct groundbreaking research in Michoacan, Mexico. He has secured a grant to install stations across the subduction zone, enhancing our understanding of seismic activity and volcanic monitoring in Michoacan region. This initiative builds upon previous studies conducted using the same network, promising valuable insights into seismic phenomena.
