Total Solar Eclipse:

Join us to view the total solar eclipse in one of the premier viewing locations in the country. On Monday, August 21, 2017, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible in the continental United States for the first time in almost 40 years.

A total eclipse occurs when the Sun is completely hidden by the Moon, the sky becomes dark, and the Sun’s faint atmosphere (corona) becomes visible—looking like a beautiful halo. This total eclipse will only be visible on a narrow track stretching across the United States from Oregon to South Carolina.

UCLA EPSS has secured exclusive use of several cabins and rooms at the luxurious Brasada Ranch near Bend, Oregon. The resort is located within easy driving distance of the path of totality. A short drive will ensure optimal viewing conditions for this rare and exciting astronomical event.

Geology Field Trips:

We will host geology field trips and guide you to the highlights of geological and geomorphic phenomena near the city of Bend, Oregon. We will explore numerous landscapes made by Pleistocene and Holocene volcanism, faulting, glaciation, and fluvial erosion. Possible destinations include Newberry National Volcanic Monument, Smith Rock State Park, Tumalo State Park, and the Deschutes River Canyon.

Faculty Hosts

Jean-Luc Margot


Jean-Luc Margot is the EPSS Department Chair and a planetary astronomer who conducts research on the properties of habitable worlds using a variety of spacecraft and telescopes.

He is eager to observe the great American eclipse of 2017 and to discover the breathtaking geology of Oregon. During this exciting trip, Margot will share his knowledge and passion about eclipses and other celestial phenomena.

Seulgi Moon


Seulgi Moon is a geomorphologist who studies the interactions between tectonics, climate, and landscape over time scales of days to millions of years.

She is very excited to see the total solar eclipse and the dynamic landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. Prof. Moon will lead the geology field trips and will share her insights about the volcanic activity, geology, and geomorphology of the High Cascades and High Lava Plains regions of Oregon.

Weather Disclaimer: Historical records of cloudiness along the eclipse path show that our viewing location is one of the best places to watch the eclipse. However, the amount of cloud cover is unpredictable and we can only hope for, not guarantee, a clear sky.

FIELD TRIPS

Prof. Seulgi Moon will guide us through a number of geological and geomorphic highlights near Bend, Oregon. We will explore a variety of landscapes influenced by Pleistocene and Holocene volcanism, faulting, glaciation, and fluvial erosion. Possible field sites include Newberry National Volcanic Monument and its impressive caldera, cinder cones, lava tubes, and lava flows, Smith Rock State Park, Tumalo State Park, and the Deschutes River Canyon. The field trip itinerary will be finalized after a reconnaissance mission in August 2016.

Possible one-day field trip at Newberry Volcano

This day field trip involves multiple scenic stops at Newberry Volcano, including inside the caldera. Newberry Volcano is located at the intersection of the Cascade Range and the High Lava Plains Region. The lava age ranges from ~500,000 years to late Holocene, and the most recent caldera-forming event occurred ~80,000 years ago. We will visit a range of lava types and compositions including early distal basalts as well as the youngest intracaldera obsidian flow. Potential stops include Paulina Creek Falls, Paulina Peak, Big Obsidian Flow, and East Lake.

Possible half-day field trip at Smith Rock State Park and Tumalo Creek

This half-day field trip includes scenic stops at Smith Rock State Park and the glacial and fluvial valleys near Tumalo Creek.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

TRAVEL TO BRASADA RANCH IN BEND, OREGON:

Guests are responsible for their own travel to Bend, Oregon. Due to the popularity of the event, we encourage guests to book their travel as soon as possible.

PRICING:

$1,895 per person (based on double occupancy per room) and $2,695 per person (based on single occupancy per room). Price includes the following for August 18 – 22, 2017: 4-night accommodation at the Brasada Ranch in Bend, Oregon, coach bus service for field trips and to the site of viewing the total solar eclipse, cocktail reception, 3 lunches, 2 dinners, lectures, guided field trips, and solar glasses.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE:

Upon reservation a $1,000 per person non-refundable deposit is due to secure your place on the trip. The remainder of the payment will be due on May 1, 2017. EPSS reserves the right to cancel reservations that are not fully paid by May 1, 2017, which will result in the forfeiture of the $1,000 deposit.

CANCELATIONS & REFUNDS

All cancellations must be submitted in writing to be valid. Every cancellation, regardless of the reason, will result in the forfeit of the $1,000 per person non-refundable trip deposit. Cancellations made between May 1, 2017 and August 1, 2017 will result in forfeiture of 70% of trip cost. No refunds are granted after August 1, 2017, including no-shows or early departures from a trip already in progress. The payment of the deposit or any other partial payment for a reservation constitutes consent by all guests covered by that payment to all provisions of the terms & conditions contained in this reservation form whether the guest has signed the reservation form or not.
